Oxford Reading Lists Online (ORLO): Adding Articles

Adding articles from SOLO

If the article is indexed in SOLO, you can using a function in SOLO which pushes an iterm either to your ORLO favourites or straight to your ORLO list. Make sure you are logged in to SOLO when searching for your item, then from the three dots menu of each item you can access the Favourites/ORLO button:

On the next screen, either select Favourites and click Submit; or select ORLO List, and start typing your list to find the list and section to which to add it:

Navigate to your list, and the resource will appear.
This function will work on any item catalogued in SOLO, with the exception of electronic Legal Deposit items. Please do not attempt to download and upload electronic Legal Deposit articles, as this is against the terms of use. For alternatives to this, please see the box on the right.

For more detailed instructions on adding citations from SOLO, see the following guide:

When articles are not listed on SOLO

Not all articles are individually indexed on SOLO; this is particularly true for older journal articles. You can add these articles a number of ways.

Using the Cite it! tool
This is often the quickest way of adding an article.

  1. Add the Cite It! bookmarklet following the Instructions in our guide.
  2. Using SOLO, navigate to your journal's home page and find the article you need to cite.
  3. Click on the Cite it! Bookmarklet to grab the article and add it to your favourites or direct to your reading list. Check the metadata and edit accordingly. You may also see library coverage on the popup:

Add and edit the SOLO record
You can also add the SOLO record for the entire journal to your list, and edit it to show the specific article. This is good for journals for which we only have print coverage, or where electronic coverage begins after the article you cite; you can then request a digitization of the relevant article using the Request Digitization button.

  1. Find the record for the journal in SOLO, and use the Favourites/ORLO button to add to your reading list.
  2. Navigate to your list; find the journal and use the three-dots menu to edit:

  3. Change the item type to "Article", and fill in or change the rest of the information on the citation. It is particularly important to include the start and end pages - often ORLO's software can match this to a URL and add a direct link automatically.

  4. Click "Save" to save the article. You can then request a digitization if one is needed.
