Oxford Reading Lists Online (ORLO): Reference Managers

Using Reference Managers with ORLO

ORLO is configured to use the following Reference Management Software:

  • Zotero
  • RefWorks
  • Endnote

You will need to configure your preferred software to work with your login; see the individual boxes below for instructions.

You can add citations to a list or favourites directly from your reference manager, or import references in bulk via RIS file. You cannot add items from a list/favourites into your reference manager directly; please use the 'export as RIS or BibTex' function on a section or an entire list to generate a file you can then import into your software.

Connecting your Reference Manager

To link your Reference Management software to ORLO:

  1. Click on the Settings Cog at the top right of the screen
Top bar of ORLO; the settings cog is highlighted
  2.  Select "Reference Managers"
Settings Cog dropdown menu with Reference managers highlighted
  3. Select your Reference manager from the list:
Menu reading: Reference managers - connect your reference manager account to add items to your resource list. Available reference managers: RefWorks, Zotero, Endnote

For RefWorks and Endnote, click "Connect" to open your account login in a new tab:

Connecting Zotero

Zotero requires some extra steps to connect to ORLO. It is advisable to have a notepad application open while you connect Zotero.

Follow steps 1-3 in the box "Connecting your Reference Manager", selecting Zotero in step 3.

You will need two parameters to connect Zotero to ORLO:

  • User ID (note - this is not your Username!)
  • API Key.

To find these, access the Zotero website and log in. Then, click on your username and Settings:
Zotero profile, with settings highlighted in the dropdown menu

Navigate to the Security tab and scroll down to Applications. Your User ID for API calls is at the top of the section:
Zotero Applications pane. Your user ID for API calls is 7839787 is highlighted
Copy this and save it in a notepad.
Then click on Create new private key:

Your API will be displayed on the next screen; make sure you copy this into your notepad now as it will be unavailable after this point.

Exporting from ORLO to your Reference Manager

You can export entire lists, list sections, or individual items to your Reference management software by using the Export -> RIS function. Endnote users can export to a proprietary Endnote format by following the same actions but selecting Endnote rather than RIS.

To export a list or section
Click on the three-dots menu, and select Export list or Export section:

Using the dropdown menu, select RIS or Endnote, then click Export.
Export dialogue; dropdown has been enabled and RIS highlighted.

Follow the instructions for your Reference management software to import the RIS file.
