Oxford Reading Lists Online (ORLO): Canvas

Canvas

Canvas is the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that supports teaching and learning at Oxford. It is replacing WebLearn. Staff and students log in to Canvas with their SSO. It is available at: https://canvas.ox.ac.uk/. Canvas is being used by some of the world’s leading universities to deliver high quality, digital learning experiences. It is intuitive, easy to use, scalable and capable of growing with Oxford’s needs. It is compatible with some of the most commonly used applications at the University, including TurnitinCabinet and Office 365 and ORLO (Oxford Reading Lists Online). Information, FAQs and guides are available form the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

How to embed ORLO lists in Canvas

ORLO is a seperate product from Canvas but ORLO reading lists can be embedded in a Canvas module. Canvas, like ORLO, has rollovers and so the latest version of an ORLO list may need to be relinked in Canvas after their rollover.

Canvas has a guide on how to add ORLO lists to Canvas. Their instructions should be taken as the official guidance. However, we are aware that some staff cannot access those instructions or see the images. For those staff, please use the instructions below.

Tips

  • Embedding: Only published ORLO lists can be embedded within a Canvas module.
  • Sections: It is possible to embed either the full ORLO list or just one section of it into a Canvas module. For students to use the full functionality of an ORLO list embedded in Canvas, it is recommended that you embed the full ORLO list somewhere in the Canvas Course along with sections.
  • Names: You can edit the name of the embedded ORLO list in your Canvas module to make this more meaningful for students. The title of the embedded list will automatically set to 'ORLO (Oxford Reading Lists / Talis Aspire)'. Click the three-dot menu to the right of the link and select Edit. In the pop-up screen you can overtype the text for the title (e.g. week 1 core readings).
