Oxford Reading Lists Online (ORLO): Adding Items

Adding resources from SOLO

The best way of adding Oxford University resources to a reading list is by using a function in SOLO which pushes an iterm either to your ORLO favourites or straight to your ORLO list. Make sure you are logged in to SOLO when searching for your item, then from the three dots menu of each item you can access the Favourites/ORLO button:
SOLO item with Favourites/ORLO selected

On the next screen, either select Favourites and click Submit; or select ORLO List, and start typing your list to find the list and section to which to add it:

Navigate to your list, and the resource will appear.
This function will work on any item catalogued in SOLO, with the exception of electronic Legal Deposit items.

For more detailed instructions on adding citations from SOLO, see the following guides:

Online Resources

Citations will often have multiple online links, automatically added based on the information in the citation. Especially for journal articles, it is important that you put in as much information about the location of the citation (Journal name, issue, pagination - start and end pages) as any missing information can cause the electronic link to fail and return a generic search page rather than the journal article. The topmost in any list of links is what populates the 'View Online' link on the item in the list view. Other links can be accessed and used by clicking on 'More links' where it appears at the bottom of the citation:

You can add extra links - such as a direct link to a chapter of an ebook - in the 'Edit item' view on the 'Links & availability' tab. Click on +URL for each extra URL you wish to add:

Automatically-added URLs cannot be deleted, though they can be hidden (see below). However, you can prioritise a particular URL over others by pinning. From the 'Full details - Links & availability' tab, click on the three-dots beside the URL you want to prioritise, and select 'Set first':

Use this menu to Hide links which don't work and can't be deleted. You should hide links to electronic Legal Deposit items where they appear, as these cannot be accessed outwith Bodleian Libraries PCs.

Adding items from the Internet

To add electronic resources such as webpages, YouTube videos and journal articles to your new ORLO list, you will need to install the Cite It! bookmarklet to your browser; please download the PDF guide below for detailed instructions. To add print and electronic resources from SOLO, please use the Reading List function in SOLO, detailed above.

Please note that not all browsers can support the Bookmark plug-in due to their advanced security settings and some content doesn't respond well to the plugin, though most academic resources do. Instead of the plug in you can also install a browser extension for Google Chrome, Firefox and Edge. You may need to pause or remove browser AdBlockers in order to install the bookmarklet.

Some Tips for adding items from the internet

Do be mindful of copyright - just because an item can be found on the internet does not mean it is there legally!
Ask yourself:

  • Is it in copyright? (in the UK, copyright typically runs to 70 years after the death of the last surviving author, director, writer, or composer)
  • Who is hosting it? Is it a reputable website? A society or foundation which owns the copyright of the author's work?
  • Copyright of a published work does not necessarily reside with the author; they may not have permission to upload their essay or article.

Please do not use URL shorteners like bit.ly or TinyURL for links in reading lists, as this can lead to security problems. Instead, the link should be the actual web address you want to use.

Tips for Bodleian ebooks:

  • See the Bodleian Libraries ebook LibGuide for further details about ebooks in the Oxford Collections, such as the Finding ebooks page which might be useful for creating your reading lists.
  • Do not add Electronic Legal Deposit items to ORLO reading lists as these cannot be accessed by students remotely. These titles can only be accessed from a PC in one of Bodleian Libraries reading rooms.

Citations - Quick reference guide

There are several ways of adding items and content to your ORLO reading list - the following table should help you decide what method to use for which type of item.

Method Type of resource
SOLO Favourites/ORLO All SOLO items, both print and electronic (see 'Adding Items from SOLO' box)
Cite It! tool Online resources e.g. YouTube, Articles, Publishers' websites (for books not on SOLO). See 'Adding Items from the Internet' box.
Request Digitization To request a scan of a chapter of a physical book where no electronic copy exists. Copyright limits apply.
Upload a File For course materials, OA articles and out of copyright resources not available online. Files will be checked by staff for copyright compliance.

Upload a File

The 'Upload a File' service in ORLO is intended for unpublished material, such as lecture notes and transcripts. You will be asked to complete a copyright declaration upon each upload, and Bodleian Libraries Staff will check each file for copyright compliance. Files that do not comply will be removed.

Items available online and/or via library subscriptions should always be linked to directly; please do not download pdfs and upload them to the Upload a File service, as these will be removed.

It should not be used in place of the ORLO Digitisation Service; if you are unable to see a 'Request Digitization' button, then it is likely you haven't yet requested a Course Record. Please fill in our Course Record Request form.

Moving Items

There are a few ways of moving items around within a reading list:

  1. Step-by-step - good for moving items one or two places up or down. Click on the check-box on the left of a citation to cause the actions bar to appear at the top of the screen. Click the up and down arrows to move the citation. Multiple items can be selected at once.

  2. Dragging - also good for moving items a short way; some users can find it fiddly, however. Hover the mouse over the left hand side of the citation until you see the drag waffle icon. A horizontal positioning bar will appear as you drag, showing where the citation is being positioned:

  3. Move to clipboard. Good if you need to move an item to another section entirely. Click on the three-dots on any citation, and select 'Move item':

A clipboard icon will appear on the right of the list:The right hand side of an ORLO list.A clipboard icon has appeared and is highlighted.
Navigate to the section of the list where you want the item to be moved. Click on the Clipboard icon, and drag the item into place on the list, using the horizontal bar to position:
