Oxford Reading Lists Online (ORLO): If you're having difficulty with ORLO...

Troubleshooting Guide

This is intended as a basic troubleshooting guide for librarians to look through when students are having various difficulties with ORLO lists.
This list will be revised and added to as other frequently asked questions come to light.
If the problem persists, or you feel an issue needs further investigation, please email orlo@bodleian.ox.ac.uk or book a consultation with the ORLO Co-Ordinator.

Frequently Encountered Problems

Things to check if there are issues opening or loading a reading list:

  1. If the user is off-campus, or connecting wirelessly over eduroam, are they running the University's VPN (Virtual Private Network)? A VPN allows off-campus/wireless access to University-owned resources, and may help access to ORLO. See IT Services VPN Pages for information.
  2. It is often worth clearing browser cache or cookies, as saved information can sometimes hinder access. You may encounter a 404 error message when you need to clear your cache:

    Different browsers have different instructions:
    Google Chrome
    Firefox
    Safari
    Edge
Google Chrome and Firefox are the browsers Talis recommend for best access to ORLO.
Once the cache is cleared, please refresh the page. You may need to sign in to some pages again with your SSO.
  3. If your guide is marked public, but is asking for an SSO login: delete the following string of the URL in the bar ' &login=1 ' and use the resulting shortened URL to link to/share with your students.

If there are issues with individual citations:

  1. If the Kortext reader displays an error (such as 'access denied'), please follow the steps on clearing cache outlined above.
  2. If an Oxford-owned ebook will not open, the user may need to have the VPN running in order to access the item. Please follow the VPN directions on the IT support pages.
  3. Some ebooks have a user limit; the message indicating this can vary from provider to provider. The user will need to try the ebook again later if more people are trying to access the book.
  4. If a link appears broken, make sure you are still signed in to ORLO with your SSO. You can also try running the Oxford VPN; if the problem persists, please click the "Report Broken Link" button; ORLO staff will investigate as soon as possible. Please encourage users to fill in their details so staff can follow up on the report.
