This guide is intended for researchers and students studying LGBTQ+ history. It is also useful for members of public with an interest in LGBTQ+ history or who are members of the LGBTQ+ community wish to gain an historical perspective.
Use this guide to find out about available resources for LGBTQ+ history including archives, books, journals and more. Use the tabs at the top to navigate to different resources.
This is a beta version of the guide and we very much welcome feedback via email. Do you have a suggestion for additional resources? Recommend a resource now!
This guide was created by the 2024-25 graduate trainee based at the History Faculty Library. The resources contained in it were crowdsourced during a hackathon event attended by over 70 people, both in person and online. As such, this guide is inevitably limited in scope. For example, as the event took place in a British university, most of the resources focus on LGBTQ+ history in the English speaking world.
The resources have been categorised by topic, format, and time period. All the resources in this guide appear on one of the 'topic' pages, whereas only a selection of resources appear on the 'format' and 'time period' pages.
Please note: while all the resources have been checked for quality and relevance, users should use their own judgement when deciding whether or not a resource is trustworthy.
The resources in this guide pertain to LGBTQ+ people and their lives from a wide range of periods in history. This means that a number of resources will make reference to terminology that would now be deemed outdated, inappropriate, or even offensive.
This LibGuide was created by the 2024-2025 Graduate Trainee at the History Faculty Library.
Many thanks go to them for their hard work.
Thanks also to all those who participated in the LGBTQ+ History Hackathon and provided the resources for this guide, and to the History Faculty for hosting and funding the event.
