John Johnson Collection for HistoriansThe John Johnson Collection of Printed Ephemera is a treasure trove for those interested in British History from 1800 to 1939. Ephemera are uninterpreted documents of the past. Redolent of their period, they give glimpses of what it was like to live at a given time through fascinating details which have often escaped formal history books.
John Johnson Collection for Local HistoriansAdvertisements, catalogues, bill headings, handbills or flyers, playbills, trade cards, headed notepaper.... all these ephemera disappear so rapidly, taking with them tiny insights into social and commercial history.
The John Johnson Collection contains a wealth of such material. Furthermore, a large proportion of ephemera of interest to local historians is catalogued (providing access by place) and digitised, providing information about your town which it might be difficult to find elsewhere - who was trading in a particular street, what their premises looked like 150 years ago.... Ephemera don't contain the whole story, but provide bits of the puzzle that is local history.

Witchcraft & the law in early modern EuropeBetween (at least) the 14th and 18th centuries, societies across Europe and colonial America could be convulsed by such an acute fear of the existence and exercise of demonic powers within their ranks that the authorities for law and order became involved. Court records are crucial - though not the sole - evidence of these waves of panic, and the consequences which could befall those found guilty.
