It may be sensible to remove the "To 1500" limitation.

Please note: the Law Bod holds very little printed material in canon law on its open shelves. Some may be available in other Bodleian Reading Rooms - but a considerable proportion will be in Closed Stacks. (Further help with Requesting an item from Closed Stack.)

Canon law and church courts in England

Chapter 8 in IELH (below) 'The Ecclesiastical Courts' Baker "outlines the history of the Church courts in England."

For many centuries, the rules of church law had great impact on the lives of the "ordinary" person  - for example as they tried to live in harmony with their neighbours, decided to get married (or wanted to get out of an unhappy marriage), and when they needed to provide for their families after their own death.

The LawBod holds the recent (2004) volume from the Oxford History of English Law series which deals with ecclesiastical law up to 1640, and pertinent Selden Society publications (Holders of an Oxford Single Sign On can access both online see links below.)

Please note: the Law Bod holds very little printed material in canon law on its open shelves. Some may be available in other Bodleian Reading Rooms - but a considerable proportion will be in Closed Stacks.  For example,  Dorothy M. Owen The medieval canon law : teaching, literature and transmission (1990) could be read either in the Bodleian History Faculty Lib, Upper Gladstone Link: KD100 OWE 1990 or Requested from the Closed Stack. (Further help with Requesting an item from Closed Stack.)
