A guide to online resources for staff employed by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Subjects: Medicine

Introduction

Knowledge and Library Hub logo

The NHS Knowledge and Library Hub (the Hub) is a search engine connecting NHS staff to high-quality knowledge and evidence resources all in one place, including journal articles, e-books, databases, and other resources. You can access the Hub from anywhere, at home or in the office.

The Knowledge and Library Hub is the gateway to most NHS library resources.

Getting started

The NHS Knowledge and Library hub (the Hub) is the gateway to most NHS resources, so it is a good starting point for your search.

Use the tabs at the top of this section for more information about the Hub.

The Hub offers an intuitive search experience for quick searches and options for in-depth searches.

  • Over 7,000 journals
  • Books and e-publications including OUP handbooks
  • One-click access to full-text, request a copy or connect with an NHS library
  • Clinical decision support tools such as BMJ Best Practice
  • Clinical guidelines and procedures
  • Access to in depth search tools like Medline, EMBASE and CINAHL

Seamless access to journals is built in with one click access to PDFs, with an option to request journal articles that are not available.

How to Access the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

  1. Visit the Knowledge and Library Hub homepage.
  2. Click the yellow 'Welcome, Guest' banner at the top of the page and sign in with your OpenAthens account*. This ensures that you have full access to resources purchased for OUH Trust staff. If you have signed in successfully, the yellow banner will disappear.

*Don't have an OpenAthens account? Visit our OpenAthens page to find out how to get signed up.

SOLO - Search Oxford Libraries Online

The Knowledge and Library Hub is a great tool for finding online resources. But if you still can't find what you're looking for, you can also try SOLO (Search Oxford Libraries Online), the search & discovery tool of the major collections of the Bodleian Libraries.

Using SOLO to Access Online Resources (OUH Staff)
Anyone can use SOLO to explore library resources. However, in order to access most of the online content in SOLO, OUH staff need to first join the library. If you're employed by the OUH, library membership is free. Once you’ve signed up, you will be given onsite access to most of the electronic resources in SOLO, including ebooks, ejournals and databases. Just follow the steps below:

Log in to a library PC (university network) with your Bodleian Libraries username and password (you'll be given this information when you join the library).

  • Library (university network) PCs are available at: The Cairns Library (available 24/7), Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre Library and Knowledge Centre Library.
  • Alternatively, connect your personal device to the "Bodleian Libraries" Wi-Fi using these same credentials. This network is available at the abovementioned sites.
  • Finally, open SOLO and explore the available materials.

Offsite access is only possible for members of the University of Oxford via their Oxford Single Sign On. (OUH staff have remote access to a separate collection of resources via NHS OpenAthens).

For detailed guidance on using SOLO, visit the Bodleian Libraries Guide to SOLO.

Using the EBSCO interface

The Knowledge and Library Hub uses the EBSCO interface. This is fairly intuitive, but if you would like a walk-through of how the EBSCO interface works (useful for more advanced searching), please refer to our library guide below. We have also included links to some bitesize training videos.

Advanced searching

The Knowledge and Library Hub has links to bibliographic databases for more advanced searching, including Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase and EBSCO CINAHL. Visit our Databases page for more information about these different databases.
