Definitions

Terms you may encounter in your research

Newspaper
A document published regularly, consisting of news reports, articles, photographs, and advertisements traditionally printed on large sheets of paper folded together.

Online, or digital newspaper
An online version of a newspaper, either as a stand-alone publication (born digital), or as the online version of a printed periodical.

Journal/Magazine
A periodical publication containing news or dealing with matters of current interest in any particular sphere. Can have physical and/or digital (electronic) format.

The Bodleian Libraries provide access to a wide range of current and historical news sources for African Studies. The key printed African newspapers, held in the Weston Library Special Collections, include the Cape Times, East African Standard, and the Rhodesia Herald.  Search SOLO, Oxford Libraries' catalogue, to locate them.

The Bodleian Libraries subscribe to a number of databases which provide access to historical newspapers and news content.  A selection of interest to African Studies is listed below. Readers may need their Single Sign On to access full text.
