Visiting archives in Germany: a guide to discovering and using them: Literary archives

This guide is designed to help you finding your way through German archives and to enable you identifying exactly what you need for your research - quick and easy.

Literary archives on the web

In the list below you will find only the larger and more important of Germany's literary archives.

There are, however, a great many smaller ones as well, for instance the Jean-Paul-Museum in Bayreuth with its 365 autographs or the “Archiv Schreibende ArbeiterInnen” (Archive of writing labourers) in Berlin (3 volunteers, open Thursdays by prior appointment only).

In order to find archives like that it’s best to use the regional portals or the database Kalliope, the links are listed in “Find it”.
