Key resources for British Archaeology

Archaeology Data Service
A key database of resources on UK Archaeology and the Historic Environment from the Palaeolithic to the present day.
Use ARCHSEARCH to search and browse UK historic environment inventories.
Use LIBRARY to access unpublished fieldwork reports; to search references to archaeological literature (especially older publications); to access a number of journal titles, including older issues of local archaeological society journals.
Heritage Gateway
The website provides access to local and national records on the historic environment including Historic Environment Records, Historic England Research Records (replaces PastScape), and records from the National Trust Historic Buildings Sites and Monuments Record.
Historic England
The Historic England (formerly English Heritage) website includes links to the Historic England Archive where you can access photographs, reports from the Royal Commission on Historic Monuments and the full text of many Historic England Research Reports.
Portable Antiquities Scheme
The Portable Antiquities Scheme's database (finds.org.uk) holds records of archaeological finds discovered by members of the public (for example by metal-detecting).

Archaeology in Europe
Site maintained by David Beard, OUDCE tutor. Its contents include archaeological events, educational resources and links to online articles
Archeox: The East Oxford Archaeology & History Project
Community archaeology project led by OUDCE in partnership with community groups, University Museums and University of Oxford School of Archaeology
Atlas of Hillforts of Britain and Ireland
Information on all 1,147 archaeological sites identified as hillforts in Britain and Ireland. Project led by archaeologists at the Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh with data collected by volunteer groups

A collection of freely available resources identified and/or created by OUDCE tutors. Some resources are specifically linked to weekly class courses, but are open to all

Guide to access free open access scholary resources on SOLO and beyond
MyJSTOR
If you register for MyJSTOR you will get access to 6 free JSTOR articles per month. This has been extended to 100 per month during the COVID-19 pandemic
BASE
Bielefed Academic Search engine is highly recommended. Use the 'Advanced Search' to exclude dissertations and book reviews.
Directory of Open Access Journals
Use the 'Journals' search to discover journals in your field which are fully open access (i.e. all of the articles are free)
Access to Research
Access to Research is an initiative which provides free access to academic e-journals in public libraries. Note that you cannot access them at home, only in libraries. You can find a full list of participating libraries as well as information about the journals included on the Access to Research website.
