St Anne's College Library: How to Borrow, Return & Renew

Introduction

This page has information on borrowing, renewing, and returning books and other items in St. Anne's College Library.

You can borrow up to 999 books, though it's a good idea to stay on top of your reading and not hoard too many books. Books are usually due for return or renewal by 5pm on Wednesday of 8th Week or 1st Week after Vacation.

How to Borrow

We have Self-Issue machines in the foyers of both library buildings.

To Borrow:

  1. Press 'Borrow' on the screen.
  2. Scan your University card under the red beam.
  3. Place your books in a pile on the white pad. The pad can check multiple books at the same time.
  4. Check that all of your books have appeared in the list on screen and then press 'Finish'
  5. If a book doesn't appear or appears in red, just ask us for help. If we're not around, please note down the problem on the notepad provided. You may then take the book from the Library and we will sort the problem later.

Returning Books

To Return:

You don't need to do anything with the Self-Issue Machine to return books. Just leave them in the designated area for the building they came from and library staff will check them in for you.

Tim Gardam Building - Please leave books with shelfmarks 000-330s, 350s-600s, Stack, and PER in the book returns box in the foyer.

Hartland House Library - Please return books with shelfmarks 700-900s, 340s (Law), TE, TR, Welfare, Jenkins & MR to the staff desk.

Renewing Books

To see what books you have out on loan and to renew them log on to your MySOLO account (top right corner of SOLO web page) with your Single Sign On (SSO).

Tick your books and click 'renew'. Make sure all the titles have a new due date! If the due date hasn't changed it usually means someone else has requested that book and it must returned within 7 days.

If there are any issues, we can also renew books for you at the staff desk. It's helpful if you bring your University card, but there's no need to bring your books with you!

What can I borrow?

You can borrow most books in our collection, but some material, including journals and magazines, may only be used within the Library.

Watch out for books with orange 'Confined to the Library' labels. You can't take these out, unless they say they are only confined during a certain period eg. Confined Michaelmas Term or Confined Long Vacation.

Recalled Books

Books may be recalled by another student and must be returned within 7 days. You may be charged for a replacement copy if you do not return a book in these instances.

To recall a book which is out on loan, place a Click & Collect Request on SOLO.

It's worth checking if one of the Bodleian Libraries or faculty/departmental libraries have a copy which you can borrow, as this may be quicker than waiting for the St Anne's copy to be returned.

Borrowing DVDs

We have a collection of DVDs (and a few Blu-rays) next to the Film Studies section in the New Reading Room on the ground floor of Hartland House Library.

Cases which have discs may be borrowed at the Self-Issue Machine, but some are kept separately at the staff desk. If you want to borrow any of these, you will need to come during staffed hours.

You can borrow up to 4 DVDs for 1 week and renew them once. We also have DVD drives that you can borrow and plug into a laptop.

Overdue DVDs are charged a fine of £1 per day so make sure you return them on time!
