A guide to finding the easiest ways to accessing ephemera of interest to Women's Studies in the John Johnson Collection

Dramatisation of Jane Eyre at the Globe Theatre

Programme for a dramatisation of Jane Eyre at the Globe Theatre, 1882?

Overview

Artists

Artists who have dedicated sections in the Collection are: Kate Greenaway, Joan Hassall, Clare Leighton, Enid Marx. But see also the online catalogue and ProQuest project for all work by artists, male and female

Authors. There are separate sections for Jane Austen, Bronte Family, George Eliot, Hannah More (but see also Ballads), and The Sitwells. But see also the online catalogue (e.g. for Bookjackets which are catalogued but not digitised) and, especially the ProQuest project for Prospectuses of books and journals, playbills and programmes (including dramatisations of novels)

In the Johnson online catalogue, Browse the names index (better than searching as the Christian name may have different forms, or be represented only by an initial). Names are differentiated by diphs, e.g. [author], [criminal] which help you identify the correct person. Use the "Expand index" button to give you the genre of the item and its date (where known).

In the ProQuest project, use the Search screen (you can limit this to Booktrade, Entertainment, etc.). You can use drop down lists to identify the name you want and you can limit by role. Click on the blue link in the record to get the full record. You can also search in the quick search box for uninverted names (e.g. Charlotte Bronte). This will search the full text as well as the catalogue records and will give you hit-highlighting within the record and image(s).
