Finding manuscripts and early books

There are a number of catalogues freely available that allow dedicated searching for early books and manuscripts. A selection is given below.

Calames
Calames is an online catalogue of archives and manuscripts in French university and research libaries. It can be used in conjunction with the Catalogue Collectif de France (CCF), which also has a section devoted to manuscripts.
CERL Portal
The CERL Portal gives access to descriptions of manuscripts of all periods and early printed materials (up to 1830) in collections in Europe, the United States and Australia. The Portal searches these collections simultaneously and offers the search results grouped per library.
Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke (GW)
This online version of the well-known catalogue of incunabula lists all 15th century prints in alphabetical order. The print edition of the catalogue has been published since 1925 by the Hiersemann publishing house. There are currently eleven volumes, detailing all incunabula from ‘Abbey of the Holy Ghost’ to ‘Hord, Jobst.’
Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (ISTC)
The ISTC is the international database of 15th century European printing created by the British Library, with contributions from institutions worldwide. Information on each item includes authors, short titles, language, printer, place and date of printing, and format. Links are provided to digital facsimiles wherever possible.
Manus
Manus is the most comprehensive database of manuscripts written in the Latin alphabet kept in Italian libraries. It includes bibliographical descriptions of each item. Some images are also available.
PhiloBiblon
PhiloBiblon is a bio-bibliographical database of texts written during the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. Consisting of four thematic databases, PhiloBiblon covers texts written in the various Romance vernaculars of the the Iberian Peninsula.
