Journals

The Library holds various journals on English Literature which are all for reference use only. A full list of literature journals can be accessed. Current issues are displayed on the periodical stand in the Jessup Reading Room. Back issues are shelved in the Literature sequence in the periodical section of the Lower Library, except those of newspaper format which are kept in cupboards in the Reading Room. Please check the Library's journal lists and the catalogue for exact holdings and status.

E-journals

A wide range of journals are available electronicaly. If your are looking for a specific publication, searching for the journal title on SOLO will show the availability of both hard copies and electronic versions. If you would like to browse available electronic journals by subject, visit Oxford e-journals, which is linked from SOLO.

Please note: All library readers can access e-journals on computers in the Library, or elsewhere on the University network such as Ewert House. Holders of full University cards can also access e-journals remotely using their Single Sign On. For more information on remote access click here

Rewley House Continuing Education Library

The Rewley House Continuing Education Library is one of the Bodleian Libraries. It serves the staff and the mainly part time students of the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education.

The Library's collections cover all subjects with particular strengths in Archaeology, Art, History, Literature and Local History. For more information on the collections, please see the Library website

Books

Books of interest to this subject can be found under the following classification numbers and can be found in the Lower Library (Dewey Decimal Classification):

801 Literary theory and criticism    
810 American Literature
820 English Literature
821 English Poetry
822 English drama

823 English Fiction
824 English Essays
828 English Diaries
829 Old English and Anglo-Saxon Literature

Each section above is subdivided chronologically, e.g. 18th century, and then alphabetically by author surname. Critical and biographical works are shelved alongside the original works within this system.

Books are catalogued on SOLO. This is freely available from any internet connection, and you do not need to sign in to search the catalogue.

Reference Books

There is a selection of reference books and bibliographies on English Literature in the Reference section in the Jessup Reading Room, for example, ABRAMS, M H A: Glossary of literary terms (801.95 ABR), Concise Oxford companion to English literature (820 DRA)

DVD/Video Film collection

The Library's film collection includes feature films based on literary works. More recent purchases are DVDs, but a large part of the collection is on video.

Films may be borrowed by members of the Department for Continuing Education and are in addition to your book loan allowance.  Films are on closed access, please ask at the Library Desk. There is also a video and DVD player available in the Library.

The Library also has a number of dramatisations of literary works on video and DVD, for example, BBC adaptations. Recent items are listed on SOLO, a full list is on the Library website
