French Special Collections: St John's College

Benefactors leaving French items to St John's College

St John's College Special Collections

A number of early French items were bequeathed to the college by Daniel Lombard.  Elizabeth Fallaize left part of her large French collection to the library.

The College's collection of twentieth-century private press editions and livres d'artiste was built up by Dr Peter Hacker, Fellow Librarian 1985-2006. It is particularly strong on the work of Atelier 17 and soft-ground etching in general. Detailed cataloguing records for this fine collection can be retrieved by searching for "spec coll lda" in SOLO.

In Oxford, similar collections are found at the Taylor Institution Library (Strachan Collection of 19th and 20th century livres d'artiste), the Ashmolean Museum (mainly 20th century French livres d'artiste, part of the Christopher Hewett collection), the Bodleian Library, and New College.
