Harmonization of European contract & sales law

Since at least 1989, the European Parliament has been reaching resolutions on the desirability and need to bring together the private laws of the member states via harmonization and/or codification. (OJ 1989 C 158, 26.6.1989, p. 400, OJ 1994 C 205, 25.7.1994, p. 518.)

Contract (including sales law) has been a primary focus as befits a trading bloc.

Accademia dei Giusprivatisti europei (AEPL) (Academy of European Private Lawyers)
Free resource. AEPL was set up in 1992 in Pavia, Italy to "contribute, through scientific research, to the unification and the future interpretation and enforcement of private law in Europe, in the spirit of the community conventions”, and also “to promote the development of a legal culture leading to European unification”. (Art.1 Statute of the Academy)
It has since published (and is partly through the revision of) a European Contract Code. This is available free in various European languages from the left hand column of the home page of the Academy's website.
