The Library currently cares for two collections of rare books, both those belonging to Campion Hall and about 1000 items from the Heythrop Library. There is an ongoing project to add the Heythrop Library books to the Oxford catalogue SOLO where they can be found by limiting your search to Campion Hall Library. If you would like to see any of the rare books housed at Campion Hall, please book an appointment in advance.
If you are a member of Campion Hall, please feel free to use this rare books consultation booking form (hosted by Calendly) to make an appointment. Non members of the Hall should email library@campion.ox.ac.uk in the first instance.
All rare book consultations will take place at the desk in the narrow section of the main library (pictured to the left). In order to know what to expect at your appointment, you may find this video (embedded below) useful: Accessing special collections in Oxford college libraries and archives
To ensure the safety of the collections, the following will apply during your appointment:
- Please arrive with clean, dry hands. Avoid wearing nail polish, which can mark paper.
- Only pencils, notebooks and electronic devices are allowed for making notes. Bags, cases, pens, and other items can be left in the nearby librarian's office.
- No food or drinks may be brought to the consultation desk.
- Please support the books using the foam rests and snake weights provided. Staff are happy to provide guidance.
- Photography for the purposes of personal research is permitted as long as this can be done without damage to the item. Please ask staff for permission.
