What are the Digital Humanities: in theory and at Oxford?

What are the Digital Humanities?

Oxford Dictionaries:

'An academic field concerned with the application of computational tools and methods to traditional humanities disciplines such as literature, history, and philosophy.' "Digital Humanities | Definition of Digital Humanities in English by Oxford Dictionaries." Oxford Dictionaries | English, Oxford Dictionaries. Web. 8th November 2017 <https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/digital_humanities>.

Melissa Terras, Professor of Digital Cultural Heritage, University of Edinburgh: definition of the Humanities and how the Digital Humanities relate to them:

'[The Humanities may be defined as] "academic disciplines that seek to understand and interpret the human experience, from individuals to entire cultures, engaging in the discovery, preservation, and communication of the past and present record to enable a deeper understanding of contemporary society." It stands to reason, then, that the Digital Humanities are computational methods that are trying to understand what it means to be human, in both our past and present society.' Terras, Melissa. "Melissa Terras' Blog." Inaugural Lecture: A Decade in Digital Humanities. May 27, 2014. Web. 8th November 2017 <http://melissaterras.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/inaugural-lecture-decade-in-digital.html>.

The Digital Humanities at Oxford

DHOxSS and TORCH

Professor Terras, quoted above, is one of many DH professionals who have given keynotes at the Oxford Digital Humanities Summer School (DHOxSS). See this video of her lecture: Beyond Digital Humanities: Skills, Application and Collaboration (just one example of the wide range of excellent podcasts from the summer school). The summer school is a highly respected Digital Humanities event, attracting delegates from around the world.

For further information about the Digital Humanities at Oxford, follow the links below to digital.humanities @ oxford, the summer school site and its podcasts, and TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre for the Humanities). The last of these sites includes links to the TORCH blog, the option to subscribe to the TORCH newsletter, as well as information about the exciting inter-disciplinary TORCH networks.
