The print and ebook collections at the Bodleian Libraries cover the history and culture of South Asia from prehistory to the present day. The fields of language, literature, religion, history and politics are particularly strongly represented.
The main open shelf collections are held at the Nizami Ganjavi Library, the Bodleian Social Science Library, the Upper Camera and the Art, Archaeology and Ancient World Library.
There is a also a print reference collection - encyclopedias, dictionaries and printed catalogues - in the reference area accessed via the Charles Wendell David Reading Room at the Weston Library.
Ebooks can be found on SOLO.
Most printed books on South Asia in European and South Asian languages are now catalogued on SOLO but there are still some titles, particularly in South Asian languages, that are accessible only through the Indian Institute Library card catalogue, currently housed at the Nizami Ganjavi Library. The Library uses the ALA-LC system of romanization.
To see a longer list of new titles, visit the Bodleian South Asia page at LibraryThing.
The Bodleian holds an extensive publication of government publications from South Asia. These are mostly from the pre-1947 period, but we have continued to collect important publications up to the present day, including census publications, statistical series and gazetteers.
Most of the collection has been catalogued and is available for request from the Bodleian's Book Storage Facility, but the most heavily used sections - censuses, gazetteers and Indian parliamentary debates - are on open access in the Charles Wendell David Reference Area, accessed via the Charles Wendell David Reading Room at the Weston Library.
