How can I tell a publication/article is an electronic Legal Deposit copy?
eLD items can easily be identified by the flag 'Online access is restricted to library computers in any of the Bodleian Libraries'

From which reading rooms can I access electronic Legal Deposit?
You can access electronic Legal Deposit on public computers in any of the Bodleian Libraries.

Which computers in the reading rooms have access to electronic Legal Deposit?
You can access electronic Legal Deposit on a public computer in one of the Bodleian Libraries, this includes all thirty of the Bodleian Libraries. 

Can I view electronic Legal Deposit content on my own laptop or at home?
No, it can only be viewed within the Bodleian Libraries (or one of the other Legal Deposit Libraries) on Bodleian Libraries computers.

Is electronic Legal Deposit available in the Colleges?
No, it can only be viewed on the premises of a legal deposit library on a public Bodleian Libraries computer. See turnaways messages above. 

 How many items can I access in a day?
There is no restrictions on the number of electronic Legal Deposit items you can view in a day.

 I want to look at a particular book/article but I am told it is already in use. When will it be available?
Only one person at a time can view each item, and there is no time limit set (within a day) for how long an item can be consulted. Once the person using it has finished and closes down the item it will become available for another reader.

The turnaway message for items in use is as below: 

If I leave the PC will I be timed out?
After 25 minutes of inactivity a banner message will be displayed to let you know that the session will timeout in a further 5 minutes. If you click OK your time your time is extended. Sessions timeout as only one person at a time can view an eLD publication. 

Can I reserve an eLD publication?
No. This is something the Libraries are investigating. Items are available on a first come, first served basis.

How do I choose between different versions of the same journal?
In the screen shot below you will see three versions of the Journal of Contemporary History.

1. The first version is a printed copy, you can tell this because it has a Find and Request option.
2. The second is an electronic subscription or open access journal, you can tell this because it has a View online option but not a restrictions notice.
3. The third is an electronic Legal Deposit version, you can tell this because it has a restriction notice

       

To avoid restrictions you would simply choose the second version.  You will be able to save and copy and paste from this version within normal copyright law.  In addition, in most cases, members of Oxford University will be able to use this version both on and off campus.  

 How do I find an alternative copy to an eLD article?

 If there is an alternative subscription copy to view you will see the options below.  The options are provided by BrowZine which gives seamless access to online journals licensed to the Bodleian Libraries. 

 

 If I search by journal title how do I find an article?

 

To use the electronic legal deposit version of a journal:
1.Click view online

  

2.This will take you to another SOLO page, this time listing all the articles in the electronic Legal Deposit version of the journal. In the screen shot below you will see that there are nearly 500 articles in the electronic Legal Deposit version of Journal of Contemporary History. The first record showing you the alternative versions: print, subscription copy and the electronic Legal Deposit copy. . 

3. If you are looking for a specific article you can refine the list of articles by using the 'Sort & Filter Results' tool on the left of the screen. 

Alternatively you can refine your results by adding some keywords to the search box at the top of the screen.  If you decide to add keywords, then it is sensible to insert them after the number that starts bl as this tells SOLO which journal you have chosen. For example, in the screen shot below, keywords from the article title have been added to bl12907160.  The bl number was already in the search box (so it does not need to entered) and tells SOLO that I'm searching in Journal of Contemporary History. Every electronic legal deposit journal on SOLO has a unique bl number and so this technique will work for any journal.

4.Once you have found the article that you want to use click on 'Online access'. You will be presented with the licence agreement. Please read it carefully and click on the accept button to view the item.  

6. Once you have connected to the article, you will be able to read it on screen.

• You can use the options which run across the top of the article to search for keywords or to change the page layout or font size
• Don't forget to close the article when you have finished, as each article may only be viewed by one person at a time and so if you leave it open you will be preventing someone else from using it.

How do I search for other articles in the same issue of the journal?
Sometimes, having found an electronic Legal Deposit article on SOLO, you may wish to find other articles in the same issue of the journal. To find other articles in the same issue:

Find the original article in SOLO, go into the record. Click on 'Links' and you will be given the option to view articles in the same issue.
