Reference Management Software

There are many reference management tools available, some of the most common of which are listed on the left. They can be used to store all your references in one place, wherever you have found them. They give you a choice of reference styles for your reference list, and enable you to insert citations while writing a paper.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing one:

  • Can it export references from the resources you use?
  • Can it export references from the web?
  • Is it free?
  • Is it easy to use?
  • Does it provide APA style?
  • Does it provide other journal styles?
  • Can references be imported manually?
  • Can you attach a pdf of an article to the citation?
  • Can you use it on your mobile device?
  • Is it web-based?
  • Can you share your library with your research group?
  • Can you insert your references in your manuscript?

The comparison tables in the Managing your references guide will help you find answers to your questions. If you have any questions you can't find the answers to in these resources, contact your Librarian.
