Why use bibliographical databases

Generally speaking, journal articles are not catalogued in library catalogues.

If you know the journal article details,

search by journal article and author in SOLO Search Everything (note: not comprehensive & doesn't include print journal articles)

search by journal title in SOLO All libraries / collections.

If you don't know the journal article details, use bibliographic databases to find them.

You can find printed bibliographies in a library catalogue by doing a subject search, such as Reformation - Bibliography.

Key bibliographical databases

Bibliographical databases usually have to be accessed via SOLO or Databases A-Z. Oxford users should use their SSO ^{(what is SSO?)} login for remote access.

Why bother? Bibliographies specialise in finding articles which have been published in history or history-related journals. Important: Note that these databases tell you what has been published but not what exists in Oxford.

Historical Abstracts
Historical Abstracts is one of the most important bibliographical databases for the history of the world from 1450 to the present. Since 1954 it indexes journal articles, dissertations, book reviews (selectively) and essays from over 2,000 sources.
Bibliography of British and Irish History
The most important and comprehensive guide to historical writing about the history of Britain, Ireland, and relations with the empire and Commonwealth from 55BC to the present. The database indexes books, articles in journals, and articles in books published since 1901. It consolidates a number of existing bibliographies together with some additional material. Published guides to these sources are included, as are modern editions of primary material & a selection of printed primary material published up to 1900.

Oxford Bibliographies Online: Reformation & Renaissance
OBO is a library of disciplined-based subject modules. In each subject module, leading scholars have produced a literary guide to the most important and significant sources in an area of study they know best. The guides feature a selective list of bibliographic citations supported by direct recommendations about which sources to consult. Each topic has a unique editorial commentary to show how the cited sources are interrelated.

Index Religiosus: International Bibliography of Theology, Church History and Religious Studies
Index Religiosus is a reference bibliography for academic publications in Theology, Religious Studies and Church History. It covers publications written in various European languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, etc.) and is the result of collaboration between the Catholic University of Louvain and the KU Leuven, which are both recognized internationally for their excellence in the field of Theology and Religious Studies. The new bibliography starts on the basis of two existing bibliographies: the bibliography of the Revue d’histoire ecclésiastique and the Elenchus Bibliographicus from the journal Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses.
