Film Studies: Books & theses

A short guide to Bodleian Libraries' resources for Film Studies
Subjects: English, Film Studies

eBooks

There are many full-text e-books on Film Studies available via a number of e-book platforms, including EBL, Ebrary, EBSCOhost, University Press Scholarship Online and ACLS Humanities e-Books. All of the Bodleian Libraries' e-books are catalogued on SOLO, where you can search for them in the usual ways. If you want to use SOLO to find only e-versions of texts, limit your search to 'Online Resources'. The e-books LibGuide gives help on finding and using e-books.

Theses

The Bodleian houses theses and dissertations for degrees completed in Oxford. All Humanities D.Phil. theses are catalogued on SOLO. Oxford theses are treated as manuscripts and must be read in the Weston Library.

To find theses and dissertations from other UK and US universities, use Proquest Dissertations and Theses (available through OxLIP+) for dissertations from around the world, including North America, UK & Ireland. Some are available in full text, some are bibliographic details and abstracts only.

The British Library's EThOS system provides access to the UK’s doctoral theses.

Books, theses and reference works

Books, theses and reference works are catalogued on SOLO and can be searched for by title, author or subject. There is an online guide to using SOLO, which includes a list of forthcoming SOLO workshops, and also a guide to Using SOLO to find Film Studies Material. The best approach is to use a keyword search to look for specific genres and topics, but the following selected subject headings may also be a useful starting point (note American terminology):
